  • Difference between key_buffers and recommendation

    I'm looking to add a bit of memory to MySQL on a Linode VPS server on which I've got a small facebook (canvas app) PHP app using MySQL running. I'm not super familiar with MySQL optimization so I'm hoping to find a simple answer. I think I want to increase the key_buffer size (the default is 16M) to something like 32M to start, but I'm not sure if I need to tweak anything else as well. All I've done so far is increase the query_cache_size to 32M from 16M. There's also key_buffer under [mysqld] and key_buffer under [isamchk]. What are the difference between those two? If I have Linode 2048MB (http://www.linode.com) VPS, what would recommend I set the buffers to? I don't expect this site to have tons of visitors, but I'd like it to be as optimized as possible. Definitely way more heavy on the database access than PHP and very few HTTP requests.

    I'm having trouble with Java on a virtual server, it always gives me the following error: # java Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. I first solved this by using the CACAO virtual machine (of OpenJDK, by putting it first in jvm.cfg), but then I run into problems with my web application (Play! framework based, gives me nasty LinkageErrors). So I cannot use that VM. Instead I'd like to just use the normal server VM and set -Xmx128M by default. How can I do that? Related: this question

    Hi guys. I'm kinda a noob as a server admin so please bear with me. I've installed postfix mail server and everything is working fine but the 'from' box is displaying [email protected]. I want to set it up so it displays domainname.com instead of IP. I just hope you know what I mean.   • Make GRUB 2 boot Windows 8 safe mode

    I have a dual boot configuration: Windows 8 Consumer and Ubuntu 11.10. I tried to install the Asus drivers for my motherboard (P8Z68-V LE EFI) in windows 8, and i now get bluescreens when starting windows. Holding F8 or Shift-F8 doesn't seem to be working, so is there another way to get into Safe Mode, or uninstall the errant driver? I need to get into Safe Mode in windows to fix the issue. Things I have tried: Disabling overclock Holding F8 or Shift+F8 How can i get GRUB 2 to boot windows 8 in safe mode? Or is there another way to disable a driver that is making it impossible to boot?

  • Separation of memory oriented process and CPU oriented process

    I am develops guy working for an e-commerce company I am running my e-commerce application built using ruby on rails spree commerce. I am presently running 2 medium instances in the production. One is a high memory instance which has 3.8 RAM and single Core CPU and another one is high CPU instance which has Dual Core CPU. Basically AWS calls it has m1.medium and c1.medium instance respectively. My question is it possible to separate the processes according the cpu intense and memory intense? So that all the cpu intense process can be made run in high cpu instance and all the memory intense process can be made to run in the high memory instances. Is any tool available to identify those process. Kindly give me some heads up. Thank you

  • RESOLVED Why does IPtables's NAT stop working when I enable the firewall's third interface?

    On my firewall I've three interfaces : eth0 : public IP (46.X.X.X.) eth0:0 public IP (46.X.X.Y.) eth1 : public IP (88.X.X.X.) eth2 : private LAN (172.X.X.X) I've setup a basic NAT which works great until I turn on the eth1 interface, I basically loose the connectivity. When I turn off the interface (ifconfig eth1 down) then the NAT re-work. I've added some policy routing via iproute, which makes my three public IP's available. I don't understand why turning on eth1 on makes the LAN unavailable. PS : weirder ; when I turn on eth1 BUT remove the NAT, then the firewall is accessible by using the public IPS. So to me it's exclusively a NAT issue, since without the NAT the network works while with the NAT without the second public interface, the NAT does work. Regards EDIT : I've been able to make it work by using iproute2 rules. That was definitely a routing issue.   • Can Grub be configured to remember the last OS you booted into?

    I typically have 2-3 OSes in my boot menu: Ubuntu 10.04 Windows 7 [Sometimes, a third option, such as Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook] If I am in an OS other than the default choice (Windows 7 in this case), and I reboot, Grub boots into Ubuntu 10.04. This shouldn't happen--when I reboot in Windows 7, I want to stay in Windows 7. Is there any way to configure Grub to remember my last choice, and boot into that? Alternatively, it would be even better if Grub only did this when I rebooted (not when I first turn the computer on). I realize this may not be possible, so I'd be happy with simple last-choice-remembering.

    I am pretty sure that the latest Ubuntu release does not support my wireless internet card. Everything was working fine in 9.04 and since upgrading my browser will load web pages. I can see and connect to my wep encrypted network. I can ping google.com and lose no packets. I am at the end of my tether, what else can I try? Is it possible to download a driver to re-enable my wireless?

    I got 3 display working in Linux. I have set it up so I have Xinerama and 3 different X sessions. So my 3 displays are not all the same size, two are 1680x1050 and then the other which is between the two is 2560x1600. So my issue is when I chose span, even if the image is larger than all 3 resolutions combined, the center monitor has bars at the top and the bottom because span scales the image it seems. Is there a way if I bypass the gui to have an image span all three monitors but with no scaling? Urgent! Please help! ;-)

  • Can't get samba to see other PCs in Kubuntu 10.04 (Lucid)

    I'm new to networking. I'm trying to share a folder between to computers (both have kubuntu 10.04 installed). I'm able to share a folder with samba and can see that folder through samba on the same computer. But if I try to go on the other PC I can't see the first one.   • How to keep the Alt-Tab menu on the second monitor in Ubuntu?

    I'm running the latest Ubuntu version on my laptop, and every day when I arrive at my office I turn on the laptop and plug everything on. That includes a monitor that happens to be larger than the laptop's monitor. I always do my work on the desktop monitor, so I'd like for the Alt-Tab menu to always pop-up on this one. Instead, it's configured to pop-up whichever monitor the mouse is on (which makes sense, but doesn't work for me). Anybody know a way to change that?

    I'm a newbie running Ubuntu 9.10. I have two users (wife and me), and each user's screensaver is set to lock so that on wakeup, we get to choose which user's desktop to go to. However, Ubuntu requires a password, so this is pretty tedious. I'd like to switch users without entering any password. I know about this trick that works for the boot login, but it doesn't deal with multiple users. Is it possible to set empty passwords for users in Ubuntu, or skip the password in other ways? (I'm expecting real Linux users to suggest that passwordless users must not get any rights and there be an admin user with a strong password. Yes, you're right. But that's not what this question is about. Thanks.)
